Construction: Career Opportunities for Everyone

It was a pleasure to welcome a number of careers professionals to our offices yesterday, when we hosted an event that showcased the broad range of career opportunities in the construction industry.

Yesterday’s event came to fruition after a PCWY focus group meeting concluded that career leaders need more support to better represent our industry.

Danielle Brearton, Learning & Development Officer at HB Projects, comments: “It is well documented that we have a huge skills shortage regionally. We hope to help address this by inspiring and educating the leaders of our next generation so that the learners choose construction as their career path. In our roles as Construction Ambassadors we regularly speak to teachers and parents at school careers events. But we wanted to widen our offering by opening up this event regionally to as many careers leaders as possible”.

Presentations by Lorraine Kirbitson (PCWY), Beverley Peace (HB Projects), Brian Duffy (LCB) and Sophie Collins (WYCA/LEP) delivered engaging content to our visitors that covered industry shortage figures, college provision pathways, myth busting some common misconceptions and creating discussion around making viable links from curriculum subjects into industry roles. An example of this is how a geography student may follow the path to become an environmental specialist. This was then followed by a tour of our offices where colleagues provided an introduction to their functions and details of how they entered the industry.

Visitors heard from colleagues from a wide range of departments, including: purchasing; HR; marketing; estimating; health and safety; and finance, showing that there is much more to the construction industry than they might have considered previously.

One career professional from Calderdale wrote on his feedback form: “This was one of the best careers events I have been to.” with another attendee stating that: “It was great to get an insider’s view, hearing real life experiences from the people at their desks”.

After the event many people where queuing to ask us to be involved in their careers ideas and upcoming events.

A successful day all round and we look forward to continuing our support.
