Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
I chose to do an apprenticeship because I much prefer hands-on learning and wanted to escape the four walls of a class room. Also, my father completed an Apprenticeship and he encouraged me to follow the same path.
What did you expect and has it been what you expected?
I didn’t know what to expect. This was the start of the next stage of my life…I didn’t want to base it on others’ experiences. This is probably why I was more willing to throw myself into the unknown…very much with an open mind.
How have you juggled your learning and work effectively?
Taking notes has been key and then putting the theory into practice in every situation I can. I would add that without the understanding and help from my team I don’t think I would have been able to pick things up as fast as I have.
What now? Next steps?
As I haven’t decided on my specific career path yet, I am willing to learn as much as I can about the business and its various functions. For example, I have been helping out our QS team when I have time. Next steps are to continue on the path I’m on whilst taking every piece of advice from who is willing to give it out.
What are the key benefits you have experienced, thanks to an apprenticeship?
I think the key benefits of an Apprenticeship are being able to learn from others, earning money and becoming more mature and informed to plan my future. We can’t forget the people I have met, and learned from, due to having this Apprenticeship.
Would you recommend apprenticeships to others? If so, why?
I would fully recommend an Apprenticeship to any school or university leaver. It is a great way to continue to learn while not focusing on just working. Another reason I would recommend Apprenticeships is to people like me who may not have a set plan on what they want to do, but the ones who can gain stability while still having the freedom to try things. Nobody wants a job which they don’t like.
